Advanced Simulation Capability for Environmental Management (ASCEM)

POC: Andy Wolfsberg

Creating Next-Generation Tools for Environmental Cleanup

A consortium of 5 national laboratories, Advanced Simulation Capability for Environmental Management (ASCEM) was formed to develop transformational, high performance computer modeling capabilities to better meet the challenge of waste disposal and cleanup left over from the creation of the US nuclear stockpile decades ago.

Through marrying today’s petaflop supercomputing capabilities, new and open source HPC modeling application platforms, and increased understanding of subsurface hydrological-biogeochemical processes, ASCEM will improve our ability to predict the fate and movements of underground contaminants. It will also improve our abilities to predict the degradation of engineered materials that contribute to contaminant release. The result will be improved decision-making, reduced risk, and increased safety throughout the DOE nuclear complex.
